This year I started a new personal project. I wanted to do a new material exploration and develop a new body of work. Paper has been at the core of my practice for over 12 years, but sometimes its very complicated to shape and give form.

The research I am conducting involves the ocean and its ecosystem. I am particular drawn to reefs and corals as the place that allows certain types of marine life to exist.  When looking at corals I found a lot of structural references that I wanted to explore in a new combination of materials.

The first stage of this project involves creating the foundation of the coral in which I am exploring a way to connect materials by weaving, stitching and joining different elements. I am interested in developing a new system where modules connect without the use of glue, and where I can explore more organic and rounded shapes.

The exploration so far has resulted in different organic and geometric forms that resemble natural species, a sort of ecosystem that can mix, group and exist in different arrangements and configurations. I am exploring Algae, Urchin, Anemones, and shells.

By adding new techniques such as weaving, I am able to create modules with a variety of patterns and colours, as well as adding flexibility to paper. Since the elements are joint but not glued, the configurations allow me to shape each module with this mechanism.
